HOLDING JOY, LOVE, AND TENDERNESS

Joy, love, and tenderness are some of the most radical and important things a Black person can demand, experience, or give. If you imagine the act of holding joy, love, and tenderness what do you see? I imagine a series of photographs where the holder and the ones being held are equally celebrated and lifted in the moment. For Black people, especially when faced with the burdens of the world around us, holding these things is a radical act and a way to resist what doesn’t align with our spirits. Holding joy means that we get to experience, and hold onto, an everlasting power—if even for a moment’s time. To capture the essence of tenderness in a photograph is a gift to all who bear witness. The best part of love lives in the spaces in between what can and cannot be defined. We remember love more than we remember anything else.
